Check Engine Lights
Our vehicles try to tell us what’s wrong with them, but sometimes this can be a nightmare, and it could end up costing you quite a bit if you don’t know what you are doing. And what we mean by that is if you bought yourself one of those engine light readers that plug into your car and tell you what code is activating the light to come on, and you think you know which part you need to replace. Well, don’t rely on this too much. Although some readers can make a good investment to get a general idea of what is wrong, they won’t be as specific as the ones that we use or dealers use. Relying on the cheap readers could end up costing you more money in the long run. Last week we had a customer that did this and insisted that it was the EGR valve that needed to be changed. So he brought in his own part and we changed it. Well, the light came back on. After we did the test with our code reader post repairs, it turned out to be a purge valve and and EVAP leak. The client was trying to save some money by buying the part on eBay in advance. But in the the end didn’t even need that part. So was it a savings? No it was not. Now you might be asking yourself, how can one code mean more than one thing? Well in our cars, it could mean even more than one part, and unless we test the car ourselves beforehand, we won’t know for sure what needs to be replaced.
Checking a code can cost you a lot of money if you go to the dealer. Not to worry, come to Top Gear and if you end up doing your servicing with us, we won’t charge you anything extra for checking your code. So we’re worth check out the next time your car needs some TLC
